A bedside cabinet is is probably the second most important item of furniture in a bedroom, next to the beds or nightstands. Where else are you going to put your alarm clock, your bedside lamp and your book? Most bedroom furniture sets will incorporate one, possibly pine bedside cabinet for a single room or two for a double, but it is perfectly possible to buy a single nightstand for a room where you do not need to renew all the furniture.
Bedside cabinets can be as simple as a small table or they can have shelves, a cupboard or be a chest of drawers. The type you want will depend on how much storage you need it to provide. If it is to be used for additional clothes storage or if it is for a child’s room (where there is never enough storage) then a chest of drawers would be most suitable.
The next thing to consider is the style of the other furniture in the bedroom. Your new bedside cabinet needs to coordinate with the rest of the furniture and you may even be able to find a store that stocks the same range as your existing bedroom suite if you have one. Otherwise, just select the closest match you can. If you are going out to the stores to shop it might be a good idea to take along a photograph of the bedroom furniture you want the cabinet to match. Or if you are shopping online it is quite simple to compare the picture of the bedside cabinet in the online store to the furniture in the bedroom to ensure a good match.
If you cannot find a nightstand to go with your existing bedroom furniture or you would like something a little bit different you could go for a wrought iron design which looks great with your bed if it has a wrought iron headboard. These are generally white or black but can be spray painted any color you choose. Other modern designs are available in plain black or white or there are cabinets that are made to look like sports lockers or even filing cabinets.
The traditional material though is wood and there are numerous colors and effects to choose from. Whether you prefer a dark wood finish like mahogany, cherry or ebony or a light wood such as birch or pine, you are sure to find a style of bedside cabinet you like in the color you prefer.
