Can You Afford Drug Rehab?

by Heath Watch

When chemical dependency specialists recommend that clients pursue substance abuse treatment, one of the major claims by users is that they cannot afford rehab. Although it is true that there are expensive drug treatment facilities, it is also true that there are affordable services. More commonly, the supposed lack of affordable services is just another resistance in a client’s state of denial, which can be chronic and even impenetrable. When clients with substance abuse issues genuinely admit they have a problem and seek treatment, then it may not be easy, but services are frequently available.

Regarding affordable treatment, the distinction between private and public substance abuse facilities can be useful. It is also important whether a clinic accepts insurance coverage provided by government assistance, such as Medicaid or the VA. In fact, some employers offer drug treatment coverage as a part of their insurance policies. In addition, there is a network of free, community resources that offer support groups of various kinds, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

Although drug treatment can be expensive, it can also be affordable and more valuable to a person’s health and well-being, even productivity, than its financial cost. Mental health and alternative drug rehab sometimes must be addressed simultaneously. Both forms of treatment are intended to increase a person’s functioning in various aspects of life, whether in professional, social, or familial relationships.

Substance abuse specialists are able to conduct evaluations in many settings, although an inpatient facility may be some distance away. In small towns or rural communities, it may be necessary to go to the nearest city for a suitable facility. Also, there may be a waiting period before one’s admission date. Treatment center professionals are trained in the process of educating clients about chemical dependency and mental health issues, refining coping skills, and planning for successful discharge.
