Closet Organization In Just 4 Simple Steps

by Anita Valery

Have you thought of organizing your littered closet since the past decade but wasn’t able to get yourself do it up until now for some reasons? Does the word ‘procrastination’ ring a bell?

Generally, the underlying factors that keep people from getting started usually vary from one individual to another. Some may not know how to do it while some may not know where to commence. But whatever the reasons may be, organizing a closet is just as easy as a walk in the park. All one has to do is to push himself or herself to finally get started and everything else will follow smoothly. That said, here are 4 simple and easy steps that will hopefully get you started:

1.    Before anything else, try to get some extra hands to help you out in order to get things done swiftly. Your spouse or kids are good candidates, but getting them to assist you may take some sweet-talking, bribery, or even coercion. But seriously though, if all convincing efforts fail, do not get riled. You can absolutely do this by yourself.

Now try to secure 5 boxes with at least 3ft x 3ft x 3ft dimensions. You can utilize those unused boxes lying around somewhere in the house. If you can’t find any, these are always available in your local stores and you can always re-use them anyways. While these dimensions don’t have to be exact, you can go for bigger boxes if you have any. If what you’ve got is smaller, you could always compensate by using more boxes.

Label your boxes as follows: “Casual Clothes”, “Footwear”, “Not In-Season”, “Throw-Away”, and “Formal Clothes”.

Note: What will go into the “Throw-Away” box are those clothes and other stuff which you haven’t worn or used for about 7 months already. If you haven’t touched them that long then chances are you will not use or wear those anymore.

2.    Start Clean – What you will do this time is to remove all items from the closet. As you go along, sort out the contents into the labelled boxes. Hanged items such as gowns and suits should not go into the boxes or they will get wrinkled. You would just have to lay them on the bed or on the floor (make sure it’s clean or utilize some clean sheets or paper to cover the floor). Usually, it is during this step that those stuff you may have deemed “gone” or “cannot be found” may suddenly come out. You might be surprised that your nice pair of designer socks or favorite glove is just tucked-in between those shirts which you haven’t touched for years. After you’re done emptying your closet, dust off or wipe off the dirt from the closet shelves and drawers.

3.    Placing The Stuff Back – It’s now time to start putting the sorted items in the boxes back into the closet shelves and drawers. If you can spare some bucks, you can install some closet organizers to increase the usable spaces inside your closet area. This system is very useful and does not cost much.

Now, as you go along putting back all those stuff back in, do not blend things up lest your arrangement will result back into clutter back again. Furthermore, as you put back those hanged items back into their places, face the hangers in the same direction in order to maximize the use of the hanging bar. There are hangers that are designed to help optimize the use of a closet’s hanging bar (i.e., huggable hangers).

The box labelled as “Not-In-Season” should be wrapped in clear plastic and stored someplace in the house where it is dry and clean.

Furthermore, the contents in the “Throw-Away” box do not have to go to the trash bin. You could properly dispose them either through a garage sale or through charity.

4.    When the final item has been placed back into the closet, you will be surprised to see that your closet now looks tidy, clean, and orderly. Compliment yourself for a superb job.
