Trying to Eat Clean? Give Cooking Quinoa a Try!

by Helene Boncompain

If you are trying to create success in your life, focusing on your health is important. It is very difficult to accomplish much if you are not feeling well.  We are all more energized and productive when we feel great.  Following a diet of clean whole foods is critical to maintaining your health.

Cooking quinoa is one of my favorite ways to eat clean. I did not even know what it was until Tosca Reno introduced me to it in her eat clean diet cookbook. She made it sound so healthy that I thought it must not taste all that great. But, the recipe was easy and I am pretty adventurous in the kitchen so I thought that I would give cooking quinoa a shot. From the first time I tried it I was sold.  Surprisingly, so were my husband and preschool boys!

Feeding my family a nutritious diet really makes me feel great. As far as healthful foods go,few are better than quinoa.  It provides your body with everything it needs – protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. The protein content of quinoa is complete, meaning that it has all of the amino acids that we need. A one cup serving has 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and just 220 calories.  If you pair quinoa with black bean recipes, you can get all of your fiber needs in a single meal!

You can enjoy this wonderful grain at any time of day because it is so versatile. I like to make a quinoa stir fry a few times a week, but it is also great in a salad.  Believe it or not, it also works as a hot cereal and gives a nice crunch to yogurt if you toast it and put it on top. It can be substituted for most any grain, so if you have a favorite recipe you may be able to substitute quinoa and make it healthier. You can also find many great quinoa recipes.  Why not try a quinoa salad today?
