Does it really matter if golf clubs are old and worn? You have to look at this question in various angles. Just how worn out are the clubs? Is the age of the clubs actually showing on them? There are pros and cons of using old clubs and what might be considered worn to one person might not be so bad to another. The following is a look at just what the factors are that can make a difference in age and wear of a set of golf clubs.
All golf clubs today are made with the best metals and materials that are on the market. The technology of today’s golf clubs far outmatches the ones of old. There is nothing wrong with using old clubs. In today’s lingo, these clubs are known as persimmon or wooden clubs. They always had steel shafts and then about the 70′s and 80′s came the graphite shafts. Today’s heads are made of high-grade titanium where the old ones were wooden. Old school irons and putters were always steel where again high grade materials are used in today’s irons.
The same concept that goes with baseball bats goes with golf clubs. Wooden bats are for distance, metal bats are for velocity and driving. Wooden drivers hit the ball long distances where the metal drivers are for just that. The only big difference in wooden drivers and titanium drivers is the size of the head. Many of the old wooden driver heads were very small compared to today’s standards. That is what you would have to keep in mind when choosing an old golf club set over a newer model.
As far as wear and tear goes, common sense should tell you if a club is too worn. If it has been contoured or compromised, it is not going to hit straight. You are always going get to some kind of wear on a set of clubs after repetitive use but a golfer should be able to tell if a club is too worn out. The best judge would be cracks on the head or dents and bends in the shaft or blade. If they are too worn out, simply do not use them.
It really doesn’t matter if a set of clubs are old. Yesterdays clubs give birth to today’s ones. It is just when they are obviously worn out that you need to look into using a better set.
