A Dog Kennel Safety Issues

by Ric

Most people know that a dog kennel is a vital piece of equipment for anyone owning a dog.  In the wild dogs live in dens which they see as protected places where they can rest, eat and sleep without worrying about predators.  By providing a kennel for your dog you are giving him somewhere that he can consider his own private den.  There are 3 main types of dog kennels, portable and plastic, wooden dog crate or a metal dog cage.  Though these cages are constructed to be safe places for your dog when they need to be crated, there are some safety issues to be considered.

If you chose a wood outdoor dog kennel, and your dog has a tendency to chew on it then after a while it may start to splinter, which could cause lacerations of the mouth.  Also, wood can harbour bacteria, which is quite difficult to remove with simple washing.

A metal dog pen is constructed with strength in mind, however, if it starts to get rust patches then there is a risk that the bars may weaken and if they snap then they could puncture a nasty hole in your poor dog.

There are other safety issues not to do with the materials of the kennel itself.  One is using a kennel that is too small for the dog. Like people, dogs can suffer muscle and neck pains when they can stand confortably.  You should not leave a dog in cold weather in a kennel that is too large as his body heat will not be sufficient to keep the kennel warm and he could suffer from hypothermia.  Finally, you don’t need to be reminded to be kind to your pet, but I must still say that dogs should not stay kenneled for long period of times as it is conducive to bad behavior, and a poorly adjusted pet. Take your dog out and play with him, do some dog training and you will enjoy your pet even more.
