From World of Warcraft™ to METYCOON™ the use of games for learning is continuous. How exactly do these and other games promote learning? There are several key components of game play that support the gaining of knowledge, whether one considers the game in question educational or not. Do games in general further learning?

The answer is unequivocally yes games do promote learning. In the case of World of Warcraft™, a multiplayer live online interactive game, there are multitudes of ways in which WOW™ (World of Warcraft™) develops skill in the participant.

The world of imagination...

One part of game play develops learning. It is the transfer of skills from the game to real- life situations. For example in WOW™, a person can join something called a guild, which is a group of players that work together to perform various tasks within the game. The leader of the guild acts much like a supervisor or employer would appear in a job; they can hire, assign roles, guide actions and fire the teammates from the guild. The guild also has a bank where game money and supplies are kept. This bank must be managed; complex levels of decision-making must be made by the leader of the guild for the group to operate successfully, in regards to the bank and many other aspects of game play.

Another component of game play that promotes learning is critical thinking skills. In METYCOON™ players are given an interface wherein they choose a role to play based on a career choice. They are given a real time continuum from birth to retirement in which they must make decisions on items that affect their income, based on their career decision. In effect, they see the results of how a job impacts the purchase of the house and car they can afford, types of activities they can participate in related to their income. Each decision they make in the game affects all the others. This is easily seen by the real- time results the player gets. For example, the game plots in the person not getting a promotion, or loosing a job, which has a direct effect upon the money in their bank account. The student must then make a new decision based on this and look for another job.

All of these decisions require highly complex critical thinking skills. For a middle school aged child, to have fun making adult decisions by learning the relationship of education level to lifestyle is priceless. This experience not only educates the student about how to make appropriate career choices and their influence, but also allows the student to develop more empathy and the ability to understand their parent’s financial condition.

These are just two games. There are thousands of games online for children of all ages. Take the time to review them and have fun playing with your students and children as you learn together.

Among the myriad of financing options available to home buyers, paying with cash is the simplest and fastest way to complete a purchase. There is no need to get several months of paper-work in order to satisfy lenders. How much one earns is also irrelevant, as qualifying for a loan is unnecessary and even credit scores don’t matter.

If you are in the position to pay cash for a property, the purchase will undoubtedly be easier, but there are still several steps you will need to take in order to complete the deal. You will need to create copies of bank statements that show where the money is located and that the funds can be easily accessed. It isn’t enough to show that you own stocks that can be liquidated. The funds need to be readily available and the proof needs to be conveyed to the seller to show your purchasing power.

Many buyers falsely assume that since they are paying cash, they can buy at steep discounts. In most cases, little if any leverage is wielded by cash offers and it is best to understand this before making offers on properties you’re interest in. Offending a seller is a real possibility and even if you are willing to come up from your initial offer, the seller may decide they no longer want to deal with you. You don’t have to offer full price on a property, but remember; if there are other buyers bidding on the same house, a seller is likely to go with the highest offer, regardless of a loan contingency. When the deal closes, it is cash to the seller no matter how the funds were produced.

Other than paying cash for the property, all other parts of the real estate purchase remain the same as financed deals. Buyers should still do their due diligence and have any inspections that are relevant and the seller still needs to make any disclosures as to the condition of the home. Title insurance will need to be purchased to protect the buyer and their investment.

Typically, a lender will require buyers to insure a home against fire. Even though it is not required on a cash purchase, it would be fool-hardy not to insure the home you paid cash for. You could literally see your investment go up in smoke and have no way to get that money back. Financed or not, protecting a property from damage or destruction is the only sensible option. Regional problems, such as earthquake and flood-zones, should also be weighed when considering the type(s) of insurance that best suits your particular needs.

When you purchase a home with cash, take the same precautions you would if you were financing it. Use common sense, have necessary inspections and protect your investment with appropriate insurance.

How to clean glasses

Taking good care of your glasses (both the lenses and the frame) will ensure that you enjoy comfort and clear vision. In this article I will relate the tips I learned from the discussion I had with my friend Richard and optician in Colorado. Taking good care of your glasses (both the lenses and the frame) will ensure that you enjoy comfort and clear vision. In this article I will relate the tips I learned from the discussion I had with my friend Richard and optician in Colorado.Taking good care of your glasses (both the lenses and the frame) will ensure that you enjoy comfort and clear vision. In this article I will relate the tips I learned from the discussion I had with my friend Richard and optician in Colorado.

Care of lenses

Why do glasses get dirty so fast?

Oil from fingers, dust and tiny scratches diminish the transparency of lenses. For a clear vision, it is important to clean glasses twice a day. The recommended way is to wet the lens before cleaning them (particularly if they are made of plastic). This will prevent scratching when wiping them with a dry cloth.

What is the best method to clean eyeglasses?

Richard advises his clients to immerse the glasses in tepid or warm soapy water (no need for expensive eyeglasses cleaner) and to rub them gently with their fingers. Then rinse to eliminate all dirt and oils. A soft liquid detergent will do just fine. You should avoid cleaning products, acetone, and disinfecting products as well as soap containing moisturizers.

Wipe the glasses with a lint-free soft cloth. The cloth you use to wipe your glasses should be washed regularly. Do not use cloths containing silicone, or paper products as they can scratch the lens.

Using a microfiber cloth bought in an optical shop is very effective. These microfiber cloths are machine washable. (They can also be used for camera lenses and binoculars).

The method we use to clean lenses can also be applied to frames, which should be cleaned frequently to keep them in good shape as oils from the skin can alter the decorative finish on frames.

How to care for anti-reflective coated glasses

Anti-reflective coated glasses used to be hard to take of, in the past. Not today! A new generation of anti-reflective coating contains agents that prevent spots from water or grease.

These glasses can be cleaned using ultra-fine microfibers cloths conceived for such coating. These cloths are 10 times softer than silk and 30 times softer than cotton. The microfibers trap oils or grease as it captures dust, it can even trap bacteria. These cloths are long lasting and should be washed regularly (they are machine washable).

Tip to make glasses last longer

To prevent the frame from distortion, use two hands to put on and take off your glasses.

When should you get your glasses adjusted?

You should get your glasses adjusted whenever you feel there is a need. If your glasses are not properly aligned you should take them to an optician rather than trying to adjust them yourself. (Most opticians still offer this service free of charge if you bought your glasses from them, a few have dropped the practice and charge a small fee).

To prevent damage to your glasses you should always close the stems before placing them on a table or other surface. NEVER place the glasses to rest on the lenses.

Money saving tip

How To Clean Silver or silverware?

I don’t know about you but I think that silverware is beautiful only if it shines. Unfortunately it seems we have to clean it every time we have a special dinner as it always tarnishes when stored a long time.

Cleaning silver is time consuming and the products sold to do it are not cheap. Furthermore these products are rarely good for the environment.

Here is a silver cleaning tip I got from my grandmother, that will give you great results, is ecologic and practically free. Grand-ma recommends to simply wash your silver in very soapy warm water. That’s it !

I have my own trick that also works wonder on silver and silverware in particular. I used it on this tarnished silver baby spoon, and you can see the results.

To get this shiny results in minutes all you need to do is put the silverware in a pan of hot water in which you added a piece of aluminum foil. The exchange of ions will make your silverware shiny in a few minutes. The spoon on this picture was left in the water 4 minutes.

I have heard of another method but I have yet to test it. I would seem that silver can be cleaned by rubbing it with cooked potato pulp, or by soaking in the water in which peeled potatoes were cooked.

Money saving tip: special products to clean silverware are rather expensive to buy. Using either soapy water or the aluminum in water tip are both very cheap, can be done quickly and they both work effectively.

While these methods work well for silverware I urge you to be careful with silver jewelry that have other metals or stones that could be affected.

If You have found the ideal home for your family or a building for your business, before quickly rushing to move in, you should hire a home a home inspector. He or she will evaluate to see if the building is fit for use. You should ask the following questions throughout the inspection to verify if you are working with a untrained or a professional inspector.

1 – What does the inspection cover?
The home inspector should be able to clarify that the inspection process and report covers all requirements of your current state and if they are in accordance with the legal standard practice and code of ethics. He/she should be able to answer your questions and provide you with the documentation in time. Identify areas you would want to be inspected.

2 – How long have you been in the home inspection business, and how many home inspections have you completed?
A professional should be able to give his or her history and prove it by providing some referrals. If you get a newer but qualified inspector, they should be working with a partner or have access to help from other qualified senior inspectors.

3 – Is residential inspection your area of expertise?
Training in construction and engineering may be relevant, but does not substitute trainings to home inspection. Home inspection are an important task and should be accorded by the best professionals. Commercial inspection is not exempted from this either.

4 – Do you offer improvements and repairs after the inspection?
There are inspector associations and laws that allow home inspectors to perform improvements and repair based on problems discovered during inspection. However, there are too many laws that prohibit this as well, thus creating a conflict of interest.

5 – How long will the inspection take?
The standard completion time for an on-site inspection is between two to three hours. An inspector who quotes a lower duration probably is not qualified to inspect a family house. Additional inspectors can be called in the case of large properties and buildings.

6 – What is the cost of the inspection?
Costs of inspecting a house is dynamic, depending on the regional rates that put the following into consideration; size, age of the house, inspection scope and other factors. The typical range lies between $300 and $400. The cost of inspection should not be considered as a waste of money, but as an investment. The cost does not reflect the quality of the service and there are no regulated fees for inspecting a house.

7 – What type of inspection report do you provide and what is the waiting period for the report?
You should be able to ask the inspector for report samples and be able to determine whether or not you understand the inspector’s report. It should meet your needs and the inspector should offer a convent time for report submission. Most reports are provided within 24 hours after inspection.

8 – Am I allowed to attend the inspection process?
If an inspector denies you access, then that should be a cause for alarm. Home inspection is an educational experience; do not pass up the opportunity to scrutinize your home through the eyes of an expert.

Contrarily to what the fashion magazines, or TV will have you believe, nobody or at least almost nobody, is lucky enough to have smooth, clear skin naturally. But with a little work and a few suggestions (offered here) added to your daily routine we can all improve and get the perfect skin we all yearn for.

1. For a great complexion it is necessary to wash the face preferably morning and night with the right kind of product for your skin.

2. Use product that are hydrated and adapted to your skin type.

To find out what type of skin you have try the tissue test. Wash your face as you would normally but do not apply any make up or lotion of any kind. Wait 15 minutes then place a tissue (kleenex) on your face, press gently but do not rub. Your skin is dry if the Kleenex is perfectly dry, it is oily if the tissue is permeated and a mixed type if there are marks on the median line of the nose, forehead and chin.

3. At the end of the day before washing your face, remove all makeup thoroughly even if you only use a very light makeup. This will help in eliminating all the impurities accumulated during the day.

4. Avoid washing with very hot water as it dries the skin and alter ph balance. Cold water will help you wake up and give you a younger firmer looking skin.

5. Drink a lot of water, at least 6 cups a day, it will help you get rid of toxin and will brighten your complexion.

6. Limit your consumption of alcohol as it dries the skin and gives it a dull and dry appearance. Furthermore alcohol speeds up aging of the skin.

No makeup remover? use whole milk to remove makeup, apply with a cotton ball.

7. Watch your diet, a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruit is preferred to a diet high on fats.

8.If you have acne don’t squeeze your pimples, not only is it painful, but you are risking an infection on other areas of the face, and you might end up with scars or spots that will be hard to remove.

9. Keep your hands out of your face. Hands frequently carry germs which can cause redness or itching. Not what you need on your face.

10. Avoid prolonged times in the sun, when you have to be in the sun wear a hat to protect your face, or use a high SPF sunblock.

11. Choose good quality cosmetics. Don’t be afraid to try several brands before you find what works for you. Your skin will be the best judge.

12. Skin requires a different treatment according to the seasons, adapt accordingly.

13. Use makeup sparingly (particularly during the day). Good makeup, well applied will look better and allow the skin to breathe.

14. What to do if you put too much makeup on? Pour a small amount of hydrating lotion in your hands, rub your hands together to warm the lotion, apply on your face. The make will be hydrated and lightened.

Vinegar Uses For Cleaning And Disinfecting

Vinegar is a powerful, natural and inexpensive material to use for cleaning various items and areas around the house. This fact may not be commonly known, yet history has it that vinegar has been used in many ways since the Roman times. The Romans used it for medical purposes, even to purify water. Vinegar has since been used for various purposes up to today.

It can be used as cleanser, disinfectant and deodorizer for bathrooms.

Tip: For ease in using vinegar as disinfectant and cleanser, it is best to use a spray bottle.

Spray on wall and floor tiles and toilet bowls and let it stand for about an hour. If a bathroom is heavily soiled, let the application stand all night. Complete the cleansing and disinfecting processes by brushing and rinsing the surfaces.

Vinegar is effective in cleaning and shining mirrors, sinks, counters and chrome. Just spray on surfaces and wipe using a smooth lint-free cloth.

Caution: Do not however use vinegar on travertine and marble surfaces.

Mildew, hard water lines and spots, soap froths in bath tubs, on shower curtains and ceramic tiles, may be removed by spraying undiluted vinegar on them. Finish by wiping off the surfaces.

Vinegar can also be used to unclog bathroom shower heads. Simply immerse the shower head in 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water. Boil the mixture for about 15 minutes. Then remove the shower head and rinse well before using. Cleaning the shower head this way every six months should prevent it from clogging.

Cleaning Microwave with vingenar – Microwave ovens may be cleaned and deodorized using white vinegar. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and ½ cup of vinegar. Heat the mixture inside the microwave oven under full power for 3-4 minutes. Let it stand inside without opening the oven. Then wipe the vapors inside the oven. Do not allow them to dry. Placing a mixture of equal parts of water and vinegar inside your refrigerator will also keep its interior clean and free from foul odor.

If there is a persistent unpleasant odor in your kitchen, boil ¾ cup of vinegar and 3 cups of water in a pan, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until the odor vanishes. Odors in trash cans may also be minimized, if not totally removed, by spraying them with vinegar and wiping the trash can later.

If your coffee maker is slow, vinegar will also come in handy. See the post Cleaning a coffee maker with white vinegar.

Food and soap residues in dishwasher can be removed using vinegar too. Put two cups of vinegar in the dishwasher and run using normal cycle. If you use your dishwasher daily, do this cleaning process every three months. Otherwise, do it every six months only.

Just as it is used for cleaning the bathroom, vinegar may be used in cleaning counters, back-splashes and appliances. Just spray on the surfaces to be cleaned, and wipe with a soft lint-free cloth.

Vinegar has a fabric softening and unclogging utility in laundry. A ½ cup of vinegar added to the water during a rinse cycle will soften laundries. Clogging caused by lint from clothes and soap not completely dissolved may be unclogged using vinegar. To do this, pour two cups of vinegar in the water softener dispenser and have the machine run a normal wash cycle. Do this process once every three months.

Stains in clothes caused by fruit, wine, jam, ink, makeup, mustard, tea or coffee maybe removed by simply rubbing the affected area with vinegar; then wash.

Caution: Do not however use vinegar on fabrics containing cellulose acetate because vinegar may cause the fibers to melt.

Vinegar is also useful in treating fabric colors. If you are concerned about a fabric possibility to bleed, immerse it first in vinegar before washing.

Vinegar may be used to unclog the steam hole of flat irons. Fill iron water container with equal amounts of water and vinegar. Switch on iron to steam for five minutes. Then iron-steam on old fabric or rag. Repeat the process using clean water. Finally, rinse the iron water dispenser.

Caution: Do not clean a new iron because vinegar acidity may damage it.

Baby toys can be cleaned and disinfected by just spraying them with vinegar and wiping with a damp cloth.

Spray-clean vinegar on painted furniture and painted walls, and wipe with a soft cloth or sponge. If a larger area is to be cleaned, mix 1 part of vinegar with 4 parts of water. Wash areas with a cloth and this vinegar cleaning solution.

Caution: Do not, however, use vinegar to remove spots on unpainted wooden furniture.

Paint or smoking odors inside the house may be removed by placing a bowl of vinegar in the room that needs deodorization. Cut flowers can be made to last longer if put in water mixed with vinegar and sugar. Mixture is 2 cups of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 quart of water.

The use of vinegar to clean windows is very popular.

It is safe, cheap and ecological. If you find these tips useful, please share them with your friends and relatives. If you know of other practical cleaning uses for vinegar, please do add them in the comments.Similar Posts:

Not everyone is an expert environmentalist, but you don’t have to be to appreciate cleaning with lemon juice. There are so many ways to use lemon juice around the house, that it is often called a miracle product. In fact it is so good that many chemical products companies use it as a way to sell their products. You can do the same with lemon as you can by using all the products that advertise lemon in their cleaning formula. Lemon cleans, scales, dusts, disinfects, deodorizes, shines… Let’s start squeezing!

Lemon is not just for cooks! A lemon sliced, or juiced or used as essential oil is one of the favorite product of the would be ecologist at the same title as baking soda or white vinegar.

Deodorizing the house

Use 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon lemon juice in a pint of hot water. This mixture is just as good a deodorizer than any bought at the supermarket.
If your refrigerator has an unpleasant odor, cut a lemon in half and place it in a corner of the fridge. This will ensure you do not have to hold your nose when you open the door.

Sanitize the bathrooms

Lemon is the enemy of hard water. To remove the white spots that hard water leaves behind in sinks or bathtubs, cut a quarter lemon and scrub the areas to be cleaned with it.
The toilet can be cleaned and disinfected with a mixture of lemon juice and white vinegar. You can also shine your faucets with this mixture.
Lastly if you want really sparkling sinks use half a lemon sprinkled with salt, and rinse.

Tip – How to get more juice out of a lemon: Place the lemon a few minutes in hot water, or a few second in the microwave oven before squeezing.

A better way to clean the microwave oven

place ½ a lemon or pour the juice of ½ a lemon in a cup of water. Boil it in the microwave, let it cool a few minutes before removing the cup from the microwave. Then wipe the inside of the microwave oven with a soft cloth. Rinse with a wet cloth, you will have a perfectly clean microwave.

Use lemon for dusting

Pledge lemon is nothing compared with what lemon without Pledge can do. Make your own mixture ½ lemon juice – ½ olive oil. Mix well then apply in small quantity on your dusty furniture, on wood furniture let it stand a few minutes before wiping with a soft cloth. (This mixture tends to separate when not in use. Shake before using).

Lemon does windows

A little lemon juice in hot water and newspaper. Wet the paper slightly in this mixture and wipe the windows. If the glass is really dirty use several sheets of paper until they are clean. Sparkling windows, no residues.

Brass, copper, silver can shine again

you know how bad the chemical products for this items smell. No need to clean them with a clothespin on the nose. Lemon smells good! Use ½ lemon with salt, rub the items then wipe with a clean soft cloth. You can even let the items soak in lemon juice and salt all night, you will have very little rubbing to do in the morning, to make them shine again.
Lemon and salt will also remove coffee stains from a marble top.

Get rid of bugs

I don’t like these little bugs but somehow they often find a way in anyway. I cut slices of lemon and put them in strategic areas. It works every time.

How to get yellow stains out of white clothes?

Sometimes these yellow stains just show up on a white shirt, a white tablecloth, sheets, or children’s clothing when they have been store in a closet or drawer for a while. These yellow stains are often humidity stains, sometimes they are rust stains or insect stains.

There are several different methods to remove ugly yellow stains.

The first method is to use savon de Marseille soap. With the soap just barely wet scrub the stains until a a thick layer or crust is formed on it. Let the soap do its magic for about an hour then wash normally. If you are using savon de Marseille you might consider make your own laundry detergent and using it on these yellowed clothes for additional cleaning power as my recipe includes baking soda.

If however after the soap treatment some yellowing subsists, do not put the clothes in the dryer. Make a paste with baking soda and a little water and apply on the stains. Let it stand for an hour and wash.

If the stains are really hard to remove then you will have to resort to baking soda mixed with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide to get them out. This mixture should not be allowed to stand too long. Rinse well.

Yellow stains on white fabrics can also be removed by using powdered laundry detergent in equal amount with powdered starch, salt and lemon juice.
Another methods to remove yellow stains is to dab them with a cloth soaked in diluted ammonia.

Bleach will yellow fabrics or discolor them. Do not try to remove yellow stains with bleach!

How to restore whiteness to clothes or linens that have yellowed?
To restore a sparkling white to your white clothes and linens soak them in hot water with detergent or soap suitable for delicate fabrics and add a tablespoon of turpentine.

Linens and clothes have yellow stains on the folds? Spread milk on the stains and let dry (in the sun if possible); when the fabric is dry, wash normally. If this does not work use one of the previous methods.

If the yellow stain is caused by deodorant consult this article: deodorant stains!

Clean your freezer with lemon juice!

Cleaning the freezer ranks about as high as the cleaning of the refrigerator in my book, but it has to be done. With this freezer cleaning tip and a little lemon juice, all the germs will be gone in no time.

This tip is so easy a child could do it, and it saves money which of course is a little bonus in these difficult times.

Use a clean sponge or rag, and pour a little lemon juice on it, then you simply rub every wall and corner of your freezer. In no time the freezer will: be clean, smell good, and be rid of every possible food bacteria.

Money saving tip

When you get to know me, you can’t help noticing that I am thrifty (my son says cheap)… Well, this tip is one of my favorite because it saves money. Let’s see! The cost of expensive freezer cleaners or one lemon (two if your freezer is large)… I leave it to you to decide.

BEING GREEN !

This lemon juice cleaning tip is not only economical, it also as green as can be. By using a totally natural ingredient to clean your freezer you avoid three things:
Allergies, pollution of rivers by ways of disposed water, and you don’t have to spend so much time and water rinsing. Any chemical product that you use will require much more rinsing than does lemon.

Other things you might like to know:

Cleaning the freezer is not required as frequently as cleaning the refrigerator, about once every 3 months is sufficient. If you don’t like lemon you can also do it with water and vinegar, or water and baking soda. Don’t forget to unplug it before you clean it.
Cleaning the freezer with lemon after a power outage will remove the smell.

How to defrost a freezer quickly? You can defrost your freezer in no time by placing a in the empty freezer a pan of boiling water. Close the door and wait about 15 minutes.
