This past year, your friends, neighbours and co-workers have been all agog about full HDTV and now you’re ready to purchase one yourself. You have some choices to make. All guessing aside, you can comfortably buy into the HD TV market without too much trepidation. The technology has reached a plateau. Any advances that come along will probably just add a few features that won’t involve too much difference in your viewing pleasure with the purchase you make today, as opposed to what you might get tomorrow. A few years will lapse before you feel the need to purchase another top-of-the-line television.
That being said, it’s important to realize your options as you purchase a new box. Your decision regarding which HDTV technology you will want to purchase depends on your viewing habits and the depth of your pockets.
Three standards dominate the market right now – 720p (the “p” stands for “progressive”), 1080i (the “i” stands for “interlace”) and 1080p. Here’s the difference:
- 720p casts a screen with 720 lines simultaneously. This renders less fuzziness when you’re watching the fast happenings in sports or the fast action in thriller movies.
- The 1080i casts a screen at 1080 lines, but displays only half the lines at a time (first one, then the following, then another, then the following, etc.) though your eyes won’t detect the constantly scanning of the screen, you will see a very high degree of resolution, but fast action can become blurred.
- 1080p combines the technology of the 720p and the 1080i. Side by side, the 1080p and the 1080i almost look the same. The difference is that when you are watching fast action movies or sports, you will see blurring in the 1080i but not the 1080p. The television industry seems to have standardized the 1080p technology for wide screens of 40 inches and up.
Full HDTV is a good purchase right now. As stated, the technology has reached a leveling-off point and there is no real reason to forestall purchasing one for your viewing pleasure. Watching television or movies at home, with the availability of HDTV, imparts all the positive aspects of visiting a local movie house. You can now experience the action and the detail of the larger screens, and hear greatly enhanced sound, without the sticky floors and over-priced munchies.
