How many times have you been out in the yard and seen some strange looking bug or creature and wondered what the heck is this strange creature? Or how many times have you watched Animal Planet or the Discovery Channel and seen some truly amazing animals? Well were going to go beyond your backyard and probably beyond what you have seen on the Animal Planet or on the Discovery Channel. The animals that we are going to talk to today are truly strange and weird animals.
The first animal that we are going to talk about is the earthworm. Huh? Yes that is right the earthworm! I know what you are thinking, how could an earthworm be categorized as a truly strange or weird animal. Well in a few places on this planet the little old earthworm that you used to catch as children and use for fishing bait are a little larger than the six or seven inch earthworm that you used to catch.
The first of these earthworms is the Giant Gippsland Earthworm that is found only in the Bass River Valley just a little bit south of Gippsland Australia. The Giant Gippsland Earthworm looks pretty similar to a regular earthworm except it is as big around as your index finger and can grow up to six or seven feet long! Could you even imagine seeing one of these strange creatures for the first time while vacationing in Australia?
But wait! The Giant Gippsland Earthworm is not even the largest or the weirdest earthworm on the planet. This next one is going to blow your mind, and you will never think about earthworms the same again. The world record for the largest earthworm goes to the Giant South African Earthworm, these monsters has to rank somewhere as one of the weirdest animals on the planet! Although fairly rare these worms are known to grow as long as 20 feet, and in 1967 a world record setting specimen 22 feet long was found beside a road in William’s Town, South Africa believe it or not! So if you are ever in South Africa keep an eye out for these giant worms, and just maybe you will see a truly strange and amazing creature.
