If you are like me you probably have no idea what a hair replacement system is. When I started to lose my hair and develop a bald spot due to male pattern baldness I started researching every way to deal with the problem. I kept seeing references to these systems but I couldn’t tell what they were. Then I finally found the answer.
You probably know them by the more common name I was familiar with, a toupee or hair piece. It seems the manufacturers of these artificial hair coverings changed the name because of Hollywood. Well it wasn’t Hollywood per se but more the comedy movies that always depicted a poor guy being embarrassed by his toupee. It would usually fall in his soup or fly off in a wind storm. It got so bad that whenever a comedian would just say the word toupee he would get a laugh. In fact, the negative fall out is so great usage has dropped 90% since the heyday of hair pieces in the 1960’s.
The people who sold these items knew they had a problem so they changed the name hoping to sell them on their merits and to drop the whole connotation of a toupee. Well they certainly picked a name with no negative attributes. In fact, the name conjures up no feeling good or bad which is maybe what they were trying for.
The sad fact is that the new hair replacement systems are nothing like the old hair pieces. They are now held on with adhesives that allow them to be worn in the pool and the base material is so natural looking that even upon close inspection most people do not know the person has a toupee on. The individual hairs are bonded directly into the base material so it really looks like hairs growing out of a scalp.
If you are losing your hair then this old stand by deserves a new look no matter what name it goes by.
