Innovation is the Key to Successful Bathroom Design

by Amy Berger

A little imagination and the right knowledge will make bathroom design less of a challenge. That does not mean, however that it is without challenges. When dealing with smaller spaces, it might be a good idea to do something unconventional. There may be places in your home that are not used very much and can be incorporated into a new or remodeled bathroom.

Some common issues when building or renovating a bathroom are the placement and function of plumbing or wiring and permit requirements. If an area is being moved to accommodate a new bathroom, then the plumbing and wiring will also need to be moved. Most places will require a permit when one is doing any work on a home.

Space is often a limitation, but with a little imagination it will become less of a concern. Some areas that may be helpful in planning a new bathroom design are hallways and closets.  Unusual shapes can come from closets. A triangular bathroom is the most likely result of using a small closet. Some shorter hallways can be modified to add a bit of space to a bathroom.

Sometimes it is not possible to use closets or hallways to make a bathroom more spacious. There are some tricks to make a place feel spacious without having to add any other rooms. Two ways to accomplish that task are to add a skylight or raise the ceilings.

Attractiveness is crucial when redoing a bathroom. Stainless steel in the faucets and shower heads make a bathroom have a modern, clean feel. Bathtub shapes also make a difference in the look of a bathroom. Some modern choices are raised bathtubs, floral bathtubs, and square tubs. Certain fixtures grab people’s attention and add to the appeal of a bathroom. These fixtures often include pedestals or vessel sinks and showers with frosted glass doors.

The choice in floors should not be overlooked. A modern, popular choice is rubber tile flooring. It is attractive because it is able to withstand moisture absorption and sound. It also is good for shock absorption and resistance to heat.

It is important not to neglect legal and functional requirements when attempting bathroom design. Permits should be attained prior to beginning work; in fact, most places require this. If extra space is being added or existing space is being moved, the plumbing and wiring also must be adjusted.

Preparation and originality are the keys to successful bathroom design. With these things in mind, redoing a bathroom or creating a new one will not be an overwhelming endeavor.  Some minor modifications and unusual uses of spots in a home will make bathroom transformation a possibility.

Today we pay more attention to bathroom design than we did in the past, we recognize that bathrooms play an important role in the well being of people. A place to relax and release stress.
