The canopy bed comes in many different forms, shapes and sizes and interior design trends change yearly making the use of this type of bed in the home quite an interesting challenge. This piece of furniture, that has such a long history all the way back to the dark ages, still has a big role to play in many people’s ideas of interesting bedroom interior decoration.
I think it’s fair to say though that modern canopy beds and pretty bed canopies have change considerably from the old traditional enormous four poster bed. Quite rightly, I think, these are seen by many as old fashioned and really only in keeping with a big old stately home. A massive wooden four poster bed really isn’t going to work in your modern loft apartment.
There are still plenty of contemporary wooden canopy beds to choose from and plenty that will suit the modern home, but they tend to have a much slimmer and streamlined style. They are mostly made out of lighter woods with a focus on tactile textures and veneers. Essentially modern interior design is still focused towards luxury but in a lighter more minimalist style. Less is still more and big heavy imposing bedroom furniture is still out.
There has been a return in interest of the arts and crafts movement and many people are being enthused again by the use of homemade, or seemingly homemade, drapes and curtains. So for many a canopy bed is no longer a four poster at all but rather a bed over which a beautiful canopy has somehow been rigged. These help to keep an airy light feeling within bedrooms which is in keeping with the trend towards lighter wallpapers and paints currently being used.
There are some very outlandish and futuristic canopy beds being designed but these seem to best suit boutique or flashy hotels rather than typical domestic use. Basically you need a really up market crib to get away with them. I guess we can always dream.
