Is Mushroom Compost Worth It?

Mushroom composting is a process which involves using cheap materials like straw and hay and composting it into usable material for the garden. Once this process has broken down all of the material it is usually sent and stored in a large facility where mushroom spores and inoculant are introduced. Some of the benefits of mushroom composting is that the beginning process usually involves what is known as hot composting. This process destroys all seeds and also kills any harmful bacteria or other pathogens which might be living in the soil.

The process of mushroom composting is involved and time consuming. Therefore the cost of this compost is usually very high. Is it worth the cost? Probably not. This compost has a very low N-P-K content and has little nutritional value to plants. It is comparable to peat moss or another nutrient lacking material.

If you are interesting in an organic mushroom compost than you should make sure to but mushroom compost which is certified organic, or it is more than likely full of chemicals which you will end up feeding to your plants.

You can also make your own compost instead of going through all of the hassle which comes with mushroom composts. This is easy to do and with the right tools and equipment it can also be a very easy and rewarding experience.

The other benefit of these composters is that they are small and portable. You can put it almost anywhere and bring it to the garden when you are ready to use the material which you have made.
