Laser Assisted Surgery to Stop Snoring

in General Health,sleep disorders

Snoring is a problem shared by millions of people around the World; the ones who are more prone to develop this problem are men; while women and children have less chances of snoring. But well, the truth is that in the end nobody is free from snoring. Treatment for it will depend directly on the cause; laser snoring surgery can be the only option for people with certain problems like an enlarged soft palate, but a great number of people can have a solution without having a procedure of this kind. For example some people snore because of excess weight, so just by dropping a few pounds they can be snore-free again.

A laser surgical procedure, such as Uvulopalatoplasty surgery will have the goal of reducing the enlarged tissue and tighten up the muscles located in your throat which causes the blockage and subsequent vibration. Uvulopalatoplasty surgery is also commonly known as simply LAUP and it is the most common type of surgery for snoring used these days. This is performed in an outpatient setting and uses CO2 laser to make incisions in the uvula and the soft palate, reducing the tissue that is causing the problem in the first place. This treatment may require between one and five repeats to have success, and this can be costly for many people, especially taking into account hat many insurance companies do not provide coverage.

Recovering from the surgery takes little time, most people can return to their normal lives in the same day or the day after, having to deal only with a severe sore throat sensation that will be alleviated with the use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and analgesics medications. You should discuss well with a doctor about the risks and care of having this type of surgery. Also it is good to know that in the long term, the effects fade.
