Girdles were popular in the past, but since the 50s they had fallen out of usage and fashion, today they are back and not only in the women lingerie departments. More and more men buy mens girdles to give their body a younger, slimmer look, and to control the little bulges they would rather hide.
While shooting The Aviator, Leonardo DiCaprio had to bend to the exigences of director Martin Scorsese and wear a mens girdle to assume the role of famous billionaire Howard Huges. The same thing is true for Jude Law when he played the role of Errol Flynn. Jude is already a slim person but we all know that cameras can be cruel and will not forgive the slightest bulge, so Jude wore a men’s girdle during the shoot.
We want our actors and our men gorgeous and sexy, that is what Hollywood wants us to see, and that is what mens girdles achieve, they contribute to what we want.
Wearing mens girdles is common today for idols of the big screen, specially when they don tuxedos on the red carpet for the awards or to play a romantic role. No bulge should show and none does. I have read somewhere that even a few years ago Leonardo wore one for some scenes of Titanic. He was only 23 when he shot that movie, but he already had a bit of belly bulge that had to go.
Mens girdles underwear were worn by men long before today, they were much appreciated by nobles during the Renaissance and by dandies in the 19th century (particularly during the 1830’s). Lest you think they are effeminate, remember that they were worn by members of the military who needed to look their best for inspections, specially those of a certain rank who made the women swoon in the salons of the rich and famous of the time.
