Leaking oil is not only messy but also very detrimental to the life expectancy of your car’s engine. There are two different types of oil leak that your car can suffer. The most common kind is easy to spot. It leaves an ugly stain on your driveway or pavement that is a nightmare to clean up. Although easy to spot, finding the source of the leak can be problematic. When the oil drips out of the car it tends to run along the underside of the engine until it reaches an edge on which to accumulate and, when it’s heavy enough, it falls. This means the patch on the drive is not necessarily near the actual leak.
The second kind is the internal leak. In many ways this is a much more troublesome and often more expensive leak to fix. When oil leaks into areas it should not get into inside the engine. For example, the pistons rings help control the flow of oil into the cylinder and to stop the oil from entering the combustion chamber.

With internal leaks a drop on the oil pressure gauge reading is sometimes your first clue that there is a problem. If you have to change your oil as a result of the leak make sure you opt for a well known brand that meets API standards. The perils of cheap oil changes can be many.
