Flooring can look beautiful but it has to be practical too, so you will probably have to compromise on the type of flooring you use in various rooms in your home. For example, it is no good having fine polished oak flooring in your hall if grit and grime is constantly being brought in on muddy shoes from the garden. Although you may nag about taking off shoes and wiping feet, families are not always ready to listen and comply. And although you may love the softness and comfort of wall to wall carpet on your bare feet it is highly impractical in a bathroom where it tends to get wet and act like a sponge soaking up germs.
So when choosing new flooring, carpets and rugs, what questions should you be asking yourself to make sure that you make a practical as well as an aesthetic choice?
Following is a checklist to help you figure out what you need to consider
- what activities will take place in the room and how the flooring might be affected by them
- whether the room will get a lot of wear and tear from people moving around
- whether the room will be subject to muddy shoes and wet umbrellas or dogs
- whether the floor is likely to get very wet and needs to be waterproof
- whether the floor will often have items dropped or spilled on it and needs to be easily cleaned
- whether you need access to underfloor pipes or cables via the floor in which case a solid fixed floor might be difficult)
- whether there is underfloor heating to consider
- whether you (or your family) will sit on the floor or only walk there
- whether the floor needs to go with an existing color scheme
Once you have answered these questions you will probably find that some types of flooring will be practical while others would be silly to use. Then and only then should you start looking at your options within those types of flooring which are practical for your room and home.

What do you think?
That is a good check list that should help some people. You are very right to tell people to think about what activities they are doing before they decide on flooring. We made a few mistakes along those lines in the past.
