Sciatic pain can be debilitating, but it is not a diagnostic, it is a symptom of an underlying problem for which there is help!
The sciatic nerve can cause intense pain to register from the lower back, down the buttocks, and through the legs. A pinched nerve, herniated disc, or a slipped disc will cause intense pain to go through the lower half of your body and it can leave you completely frozen. Many pregnant women experience sciatic pain as the extra pressure on their vertebral column has been shifted so you experience pain.
How can you find sciatic pain relief? The first thing to do is try and figure out what is causing your sciatic pain to originate. Are you pregnant? Have you put on weight? Have you been experiencing back pain problems? New exercise routines can shift the muscles and cause extra pressure to be placed on the sciatic nerve.
The first thing you should try is icing the sciatic nerve. Icing the nerve will help is calm down and the flare-up should calm down in a few minutes. Heat can also help to reduce your sciatic nerve pain if the ice packs don’t work. Switch between the heat and ice packs every 20 minutes or so to try and calm the nerve.
The second thing to try is taking an anti-inflammatory medication. This medication will reduce inflammation and you will feel pain relief within a few minutes. (Note: do not take any medication without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant.)
The third thing to try is switching to a holistic life. You will participate in different stretches and exercises that help to stretch out the muscles surrounding the nerve and can shift the weight away from your sciatic nerve.
The fourth thing to try is talking to your doctor about epidural steroid injections. This injection will be placed directly into the nerve and it helps to reduce pain almost instantly. The inflammation will be treated so future flare-ups do not happen.
The fifth thing to try is physical therapy. Physical therapy will focus on strengthening your lower back muscles along with your leg and buttocks muscles. This will help to support the sciatic nerve so you don’t feel pain anymore.
