Snoring strikes both men and women alike but in my family, not so much. I’m the one with the snoring problem, not my wife. Or maybe that’s not quite right – she’s the one with the snoring problem – me!
Well, that used to be the case anyway but I was able to find something that helped me almost completely stop my snoring (and save my marriage?) – but not without a little work.
First off, my wife told me in no uncertain terms that the snoring had to stop. Mercifully, I didn’t present any sleep apnea symptoms during the night so I didn’t really need to see a doctor. I just needed a little help to stop the buzz-saw breathing I was exhibiting.
When I started looking for a snoring solution I soon found a whole bucket load of products and devices promising snoring solutions. There were mouthpieces and tubes, pillows, straps and clips. There were even biofeedback devices and aroma therapies. I did a little research, gave it some thought, and bought a well-reviewed mouthpiece.
It was pretty easy to work with but it was not the right snoring solution for me. After just a couple nights I started grinding my teeth for some unknown reason and, while my teeth were protected, my jaws ached like the dickens every morning. So I sent the mouthpiece to the bench and moved on.
Next I tried some of those adhesive strips you see advertised on TV. I didn’t like peeling them off every morning and I didn’t like having to keep buying them. Plus I ran out a couple times and didn’t like the inconvenience of having to remember to stock up. I was looking for another alternative within two months.
What I settled on was a combination memory foam pillow and an inner nasal device. The pillow forced me to sleep on my side (which took some real getting used to) and the nasal device kept my nostrils propped open during the night which really improved my air flow. I’m now a pretty happy camper and more importantly, so is my wife.
The moral of the story is that there are a lot of helpful anti-snoring solutions and devices out there on the market and one of them might just work for you – but not necessarily the first one you try. You might have to experiment a bit and you might have to teach yourself a new trick or two in the process. Stick with it. Don’t give up. You can overcome a snoring problem.
