Storing Cheese Tips

by Mireille

Storing cheese can be challenging for people, who like me, enjoy a strong (some might say stinky) cheese. Loving to eat certain cheeses like roquefort or a ripe camembert does not mean we like the smell of cheese when we open the refrigerator in the morning. So how can you keep cheese odors from invading your house and still be able to enjoy a good cheese.

Tip # 1 – In the refrigerator cheese will not smell bad is you put a sprig of thyme and a sugar cube in the cheese bin or the box where you store cheese. The sugar will absorb humidity, and thyme will prevent the smell from dispersing.

Tip # 2 – Grated cheese tends to clump in the refrigerator. To prevent it from clumping add a piece of bread in the bag, then store cheese in the cheese bin as usual.

Money saving tip

You will save money by storing cheese properly as you will incur less waste.

Tip#3 – Keep your cheese in the vegetable bin of the refrigerator. This bin was designed so that circulating air does not reach fruit and vegetables in order to keep them longer. The same goes for cheese, the drying air of the refrigerator is not good for cheese. You can also put the cheese in a sealed plastic box genre Tupperware.

Tips#4 – When cheese is stored in a cold area, always take it out at least 30 minutes prior to consumption. Cheese reach their best flavor at room temperature. But you should know that you can freeze cheese.
