Why Choose Percale Sheets?

by wendyprather

Percale sheets are well deserving of their quality reputation, but is it because they are well recognized as the sheets to purchase by most hoteliers and others in the hospitality industry as well as discerning home owners, or is there another reason?

The main reason is that these sheets are beautifully smooth to the touch and will stay that way wash after wash. Inferior sheets, on the other hand, will become limp or develop a rough surface through “pilling” of the fabric, where tiny hard balls of fiber are formed across the surface of the material. While other sheets will be worn out after a short time, percale bedding will go on for years looking good the whole time.

The secret of percale sheets is in the weave. Percale is not actually a fabric type at all but a way of describing how the threads are woven together. In rougher sheets one thread will cross over several others running in the opposite direction. With percale sheets, a tight weave is formed by each single thread one way crossing a single thread the other. Even sheets with higher thread counts may not feel so good if they use multi-strand threads crossing over each other.

Percale sheets are available to purchase separately or in sheet sets with one flat sheet and one fitted one. To be most comfortable make sure that any fitted sheets you buy are the right size for your mattress. You can also buy these sheets as part of a bedding ensemble, although it will usually only be the luxury bedding ensembles which include percale elements.

Of course, percale sheets are more expensive than sheets which are not so tightly woven but the difference in cost is more than made up for by the difference in quality. As you spend about a third of your life in bed, why not opt for the most comfortable fabric next to your skin?
